Peter’s family has owned the house since it was built during the Edwardian period, so he is the fifth-generation owner. When his family moved to the town it was a small fishing village that grew during the Victorian era under the patronage of his family, the Garretts. They built an agricultural engine business in Leiston and in time moved into shipping.
Moorings was built by Josephine Garrett and has been lived in ever since by generations of her family. Josephine had two famous sisters, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first female doctor and first lady mayor of Aldeburgh, and Millicent Fawcett who was one of the leaders of the suffragette movement and women’s rights campaigner from which the Fawcett Society takes its name. Josephine’s daughter split the house into two after the death of her husband in the First World War and the family continues to live in Moorings to this day.
There used to be a large dip in the lawn caused by a bomb fired from a German warship in the North Sea in the First World War which so badly damaged the house that quite a considerable portion of Moorings itself was re-built.
Please do fill in the visitor's book, it is lovely to hear your comments and suggestions. We have endeavoured to make the house as comfortable, but practical, as possible but we do welcome your comments and thoughts.
We do hope you enjoy Aldeburgh as much as we all do!
